Look beneath the resemblance

Type 4 & Type 5

Both may seek depth, value privacy, and step away from surface-level interaction.

The difference to explore

What is the behavior trying to do?

Four often stays close to the personal meaning of an experience. Five often creates distance to understand it and conserve capacity. Ask what you are seeking when you withdraw.

Use an actual moment

Turn recognition into reflection.

Recall one recent moment when you felt defensive or stuck. Which concern was more present: “To understand and express a meaningful, authentic identity.” or “To be capable and understand enough to meet life on your own terms.”? Describe what you wanted to protect before deciding which type fits.

Try this over three days

After an emotionally meaningful event, take a short private pause. Write what you need before returning: language for the experience’s personal meaning, or enough understanding and capacity to engage. Check whether the need changes after the pause.

There is room to remain undecided.

You can relate to both descriptions. Look for the motivation that recurs across settings, and include examples that challenge your first impression. This comparison adds reflection, not a new test score.
