Look beneath the resemblance

Type 5 & Type 8

Both may value independence and resist unwanted demands.

The difference to explore

What is the behavior trying to do?

Five may protect independence because demands could exceed available capacity. Eight may protect it because dependence could give another person power. Either may be quiet or direct; notice what accepting the request would put at risk.

Use an actual moment

Turn recognition into reflection.

Recall one recent moment when you felt defensive or stuck. Which concern was more present: “To be capable and understand enough to meet life on your own terms.” or “To keep agency and protect yourself and the people who matter to you.”? Describe what you wanted to protect before deciding which type fits.

Try this over three days

For a manageable request, negotiate a clear scope before answering. Notice whether that helps mainly because it protects time and energy or because it preserves your authority to choose. Include a case where you gladly accept help.

There is room to remain undecided.

You can relate to both descriptions. Look for the motivation that recurs across settings, and include examples that challenge your first impression. This comparison adds reflection, not a new test score.
